Saint
Lazarus is the patron saint of Larnaca. Kition
became his second home after his resurrection
by Christ, and he lived there for a further
30 years. He was ordained Bishop of Kition by
Saint Barnabas and Mark.
In
the 9th century, a magnificent church was erected
over his tomb by Emperor Leo VI. |

Kiti
village, 11 Kilometers west of Larnaca.
Angeloktisti means 'Built by the Angels'. This 11th
century Byzantine church was erected over the existing
ruins of an earlier Christian Basilica.

Pyga
village, 32 Kilometers from Larnaca.
Built by the Lusignan King Janus in 1421, it contains
a wall painting of the King with his wife, Charlotte
de Bourbon. The Chapelle Royal is considered as
one of the most interesting structures that has
survived from the Frankish rule.

Hala
Sultan Tekke Mosque,
Salt Lake, 5 Kilometers West of Laranca Town, (on
the road to Kiti).
Built in 1816 over the
tomb of Umm Haram, who was allegedly a relative
of the Prophet Mohammed, who died on this spot in
649 during the first Arab raids.

Kilometers from Larnaca, or 48 Kilometers south
from Nicosia (off the Nicosia-Limassol Highway).
The Ancient Neolithic settlement site of Choirokoitia
was included in 1998 as part of the UNESCO
World Cultural Heritage
official list, as one of the more significant,
and better preserved Neolithic settlements from
the whole of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Larnaka District Archaeological Museum,
Kalograion, Larnaca.

The
Archaeological site of Kition is one of the most
significant of all the Ancient City-Kingdoms to
be found in Cyprus, with architectural remains
dating back to the 13th century B.C. Circa 1200
B.C, Kition was rebuilt by the Mycenaean Greeks,
and excavations have revealed cyclopean walls
made of giant blocks of stone, and a complex of
five temples. |

Kilometers from Skarinou, (off the Nicosia-Limassol
road), 40 Kilometers from Larnaca.
The village of Lefkara is famous for
the lace embroidery known as 'Lefkaritika', made
by the local residents. According to folklore,
Leonardo Da Vinci visited the village and bought
an altar cloth, which he later then donated to
the Milan cathedral.

Perched on a rocky peak, Stavrovouni
means Mountain of the Cross. According to folklore,
the monastery was founded in the 4th century by
Saint Helena, mother of Constantine the Great,
who left a fragment of the Holy Cross to the monastery. |

oldest privately owned museum in Cyprus set up
by Dimitrios Pierides (1811-1895). It houses ancient,
medieval, Byzantine and more recent objects belonging
to the Pierides family. |
