HERACLEDIOS (IRAKLEIDOS) MONASTERY |
| |
Politiko
village,
(A Half of A Kilometer from the Royal Tombs),
Nicosia.
When Saint Paul and Saint Barnabas first arrived
in Cyprus, they were guided to Tamassos by Irakleidos,
whom they later consecrated as Bishop of Tamassos.
He was martyred and finally buried in the same cave
where he had lived, and had preached.

Ayios
Ioannis Cathedral was built by Archbishop Nikiforos
in 1662, and dedicated to Ayios Ioannis Theologos,

Archbishop
Makarios III Foundation Cultural Centre, (within
the Archbishopric)
Plateia Arch, Kyprianou,
Nicosia.
This
museum was the idea of Archbishop Makarios in
1972. Though unfortunately, due to the many delays
caused from the Turkish invasion of 1974, The
Byzantine Museum & Art Gallery finally opened
its doors in 1982. |

A fine example of Franco-Byzantine architecture,
the church of TRYPIOTIS was built by Archbishop
Germanos II in 1695.

to have been built in 1450 by Queen Helena Palaeologos,
the church of Chrysaliniotissa is considered to

The
Chrysaliniotissa is a complex of eight workshops,
nestling around a central courtyard.
The building concept resembling a traditional
inn in architectural design,
the crafts center was set up for artists to create
a new contemporary twist on traditional Cypriot
arts & crafts. |

Cyprus Archaeological Museum (or Cyprus Museum)
as it is known, is the largest and one of the
most visited museums on the island. Exhibiting
some of the most priceless, and famous antiquities
that were ever excavated from the island, including
the famous statue of Aphrodite. |

Cyprus Jewellers Museum displays a collection
of traditional jewellery from the end of the 19th
century.

insight to the postal services on the island that

Famagusta
Gate - Lefkosia Municipal Cultural Centre,
Leoforos Athinon.
The
Venetian walls which surround the old city cover
an area of approximately 5 Kilometres in circumference,
and possess eleven heart-shaped bastions. Access
to the city was only possible via the three entrances
(or gates). These gates were the north, the south,
and the east gates.One
of these gates, 'the Porta Giuliana' was known
as the Famagusta Gate (or Pyli Ammcochostou in
Greek). |

Archbishop's Palace, Plateia Arch, Kyprianou, Nicosia.
The
Ethnographic Museum of Cyprus was formerly the Folk
Art museum, which was founded by the Society for
Cypriot Studies in 1939.
Housed in a 15th century gothic building, in which
part of it, once served as a Benedictine monastery.
The museum also once served as the palace for the
Archbishop. |

Off
the Nicosia-Anthoupolis road, (approx 10 minutes
drive from Nicosia).
This
Byzantine church was founded by Archbishop Nikiforos.
His tomb can be seen in the narthex of the church.
Rebuilt in 1636 and then again in 1713, before finally
purchased by The Kykkos Monastery.

Yetonia (or Peoples Square) is part of the old
city, and is considered as the cultural heart
of Nicosia, now restored to its original glory.
Laiki Yetonia is well renowned for its shopping
parade, where modern cafes stand side by side,
with the fifth generation workshops, offering
traditional arts & crafts. |

The Ledra Museums Observatory is on the 11th floor
of the Shakolas building, offering 360 degree panoramic
views, of the whole of Nicosia town.

This
historical museum of Nicosia revives life in
the capital from ancient times to the present
day.
Bought by The Leventis Foundation in 1983, it
opened its doors in 1989, and won the European
Museum of the Year in 1991.
Housed in a large mansion that was built in
1892, its purpose was to present the evolution
and social development of the city of Nicosia
from the ancient Chalcolithic period to the
present day.

This
museum located on the ground floor of the Bank
of Cyprus HQ. The exhibition has a rich collection
of historical coins. The collection has been arranged
in chronological order, of nine sections, beginning
with coinage from the 6th century B.C. to the
present. |

in style theatre is Nicosia's main venue for musical

National Struggle Museum was set up as a reminder
and in memory of the struggle for liberation of
the Greek Cypriots against the British during
1955-1959, by EOKA, (The National Organisation

who believed that the original 14th century Augustinian

Phaneromeni
Church used to be the largest church in Nicosia.
Built in 1872, with a marble mausoleum to the
east of the church, contains the relics of the
Bishops and Priests who were executed by the Turks

Stasinou and Kritis
The
State Gallery of Contemporary Arts opened in 1900.
The building itself is a tribute itself to the
Neo-classicalism movement. A large, mansion built
in stone, which initially served as a clinic,
and then later, a hotel. In 1972, it officially
became a listed building, and has since benefited
from a complete overhaul restoration. |

Paul's Anglican Cathedral Church, Leoforos Lordou
Vyronos, Nicosia.
This Parish Church was built in 1893, in a style
reminiscent of many English churches, for its
Anglican residents.

Ancient City of Tamassos was a rich city-kingdom,
renowned for its copper mines.
Excavations have revealed the Royal Tombs and
copper workshops associated with Aphrodite-Asarte. |

Arch, Kyprianou.
The
Archbishopric is the heart of the Cypriot Orthodox
Church.
Architecturally based on a Neo-Byzantine concept,
the new Archbishopric was built in 1960, the year
Cyprus gained its independence from Britain. |

ANCIENT CITY - KINGDOM OF IDALION |

Region
of Dali (Idalion), 20 Kilometers south of Nicosia,
(on the Nicosia-Larnaca/Limassol road).
The Ancient city of Dali is in fact a region
of many ancient cities. It is evident how the many
historical periods on the island can actually be
traced to this region, by the current excavations
which are taking place.

ANCIENT VILLAGE OF PHIKARDOU |

road via Klirou).
The whole village of Phikardou has
been officially declared an 'Ancient Monument',
so to preserve it's totally remarkable woodwork,
and outstanding architecture of these traditional
18th century folk houses.

HOUSE OF HADJIGEORGAKIS KORNESSIOS |

Grigoriou 20, (near the Archbishopric), Nicosia.
The
House of Hadjigeorgakis Kornessios is one of the
most significant buildings in Nicosia. An 18th
century mansion, where once was the official residence
of the Dragoman Hadjigeorgakis Kornessios, now
houses the Cyprus Ethnological Museum.
